Discussions of the basic trends which influence conflicts, be they superpower rivalry or peculiar local conditions. Inquiry into the exploitation or the containment of conflicts by the major powers. Analysis of the most important crises and actual conflicts in such geopolitical areas as the Middle East, Central America, Africa or Asia. Discussion of the changing patterns of warfare, conventional and nuclear strategies, détente and changes in the maintenance of peace in the future.

Prerequisite: Pol 140a, or permission of instructor
