The psycho-social notions about man in a natural state and in society are explored in relation to individualism in Western market society. Analyses focus upon such concepts as the social contract, rationalism, revolution, conservatism, authority, political obligation and the growth of modern democratic theories. Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Burke, Hegel, Bentham, J.S. Mill and Marx are the main theorists considered.
Prerequisite: Pol 100a or permission of instructor.
