An introduction to the major developments in Western history from the end of the ancient world to the early nineteenth century. Topics will include the origins and evolution of medieval civilization, and its breakdown in the Renaissance and the Reformation; political, cultural and economic devlopments in early modern Europe, and the challenges to the ancien regime posed by the French and industrial revolutions.
