This course addresses colonial and postcolonial experiences of art. It examines topics such as the

representation of the exotic 'other', the construction of the colonial subject, the ideology of the colonizer, the Eurocentric gaze, racism, the impact on modern art of primitivism, ethnographic
museums, and World Fairs, and ambivalent notions of the 'primitive'. In conjunction with
multiculturalism, identity politics, and globalization, the course also explores the place of non Western art in the international scene.
