This course examines the development of the short story form in the United States from its beginnings in the work of Irving, Poe, and Hawthorne, through Firzgerald and Hemingway, up to such contemporary writers as Oates and Barth. Subjects to be examined include the Gothic tradition, the influence of Puritanism, the African-American experience, gender, and madness.
