This seminar course examines the characteristics and influences of the Roman "familia" (which included not only the extended family but also slaves and freed slaves) within Republican and Imperial Roman society using ancient sources (in translation) as well as modern scholarhsip.

Prerequisite: a previous Classics course or permission of the instructor
