Research - Dr. Walter Stephan

In the broad area of condensed matter physics, Dr. Stephan's research focuses on theoretical modeling, specifically in the area of electron correlation. In certain classes of materials the interactions between electrons are of such importance that we cannot understand even qualitatively the properties of the material based on an understanding of individual electron behavior. The calculations which comprise this research program involve the development of new algorithms and methods to harness the power of computers to aid us in understanding these materials, as well as the application of well understood methods to new models.

PARTNERS/COLLABORATORS
Dr. Stephan collaborates with B.W. Southern at University of Manitoba on studies of frustrated magnetic systems using Monte Carlo methods.
