Dr. Bruce Gilbert
Director of the Program
Dr. Gilbert has a Ph. D from the Department of Philosophy at the Pennsylvania State University, which was preceded by a Bachelors Degree in History from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Religious Studies from McGill University. He has a cross appointment at Bishop’s, teaching in both the Department of Philosophy and the Liberal Arts Program. His academic specialization is in political philosophy, with particular interest in Hegel and Marx, as well as contemporary theories of democracy, capitalism and theories of exploitation. Dr. Gilbert also teaches and does research on the philosophy of art, especially literature, painting and dance. He just completed a monograph entitled The Vitality of Contradiction: Hegel, Politics and the Dialectic of Liberal Capitalism. His main research focus now is on the Movement of Landless Rural Workers of Brazil.
