Research - Dr. Jean Manore

Dr. Manore's current research involves the analysis of interactions between Aboriginal rights and title issues, technological systems and the environment. Her main focus is on the development of natural resources, the foundation of the Canadian economy and much Canadian culture. This particular project examines the history of the St-Francis River in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This river has been a pivotal resource throughout Canadian history, starting with the Abenaki and French fur traders who used the river for transportation and continuing with loggers, pulp and paper manufacturers and other industrial interests who also used it for transportation but later developed its hydro-electrical potential. In studying this river and its communities, Dr. Manore hopes to broaden our understanding of Native/settler and English/French relations in Quebec; the process of community transformation through technological innovation (which often originates outside the community); the challenges such innovation poses for community identity; and the subsequent environmental change, if not damage, to the communities' health and longevity.
