BISHOP'S UNIVERSITY ECONOMICS SOCIETY

Alumni & Recruitment

The B.U.E.S. wishes to maintain knowledge of the history of study of economics at the university, bridging the gap between students and alumni.

The mandate of the B.U.E.S. also includes promotion of the discipline to increase enrolment in the department. With demographic shifts adversely impacting enrolment rates at small universities across Canada, the B.U.E.S. is committed to recruiting new students.

The B.U.E.S. has instituted an alumni representative program in order to facilitate regional organization and communication. Representatives can act on behalf of the B.U.E.S. in order to support regional events and recruitment activities.

BUES Barnett Recruitment Program

Named after former Professor of Economics Robert Barnett, the Barnett Recruitment Program has been created to improve enrolment in the Department of Economics at Bishop's University. In his time as a professor at Bishop's, 1966-1998, Barnett was active in recruiting new students and encouraging others to study at Bishop's.

A Bishop's degree in Economics is unique, as the university's small size ensures appropriate support from both professors and students alike. There are many prerequisite and introductory courses that make mentoring and tutoring commonplace amongst students enrolled in Economics. The program is also highly flexible and is most often combined with Business, Mathematics, and Political Studies.

The Department's honours programs are the most intensive and provide the greatest exposure to the discipline. In addition to the Economics honours program, the Department offers the new honours concentration in mathematical economics, which are available in the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) streams.

These new concentrations are for advanced students with the mathematical aptitude to focus intensively on the building, testing, and using of economic models. There is a possibility of doing it in a co-op program. It is designed to lead directly to employment in the field or to further study.

There are a number of career and graduate school options following the completion of an economics degree. Some of the careers of recent graduates include:

Economist: Bank of Canada
Economist: Royal Bank of Canada
Economist: Statistics Canada

Portfolio Manager: Bank of Montreal
Financial Analyst: RBC Investments
Management Consulting: Bain & Company

Management Consulting: Oliver Wyman
Manager of Customer Services: RBC Investments
Full Underwriter: Export Development Canada

Investment Banking: HSBC
