BOARD OF GOVERNORS

MANDATE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE1

The Sustainable Development Committee shall be charged with ensuring that policies are in place regarding the sustainable use and development of the campus, as well as standards for the construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and restoration of the University’s facilities.

The functions of the Sustainable Development Committee include:

  • Ensuring that the following policies and standards are developed and implemented by the appropriate individual(s), committee(s) and unit(s) within the University: 
    • policies ensuring that principles of sustainability are considered in the physical development of, and the use of land on, the campus; 
    • policies and standards for the design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and restoration of campus facilities, taking into consideration their conformity with the University’s master plan and with principles of sustainability;  and
    • policies governing the use and storage of hazardous materials, in the laboratory and on campus generally, that are consistent with best practices to protect the health and safety of members of the community and with principles of sustainability. 
  • Receiving regular reports from the Joint Health and Safety Committee on issues related to the use and storage of hazardous materials, and making such recommendations as it deems appropriate. 
  • Reviewing and reporting on the following programs:
    • University Sustainable Development Audit, every three (3) years; 
    • Land Use and Management Program; 
    • Waste Management Program; 
    • Energy Conservation Program.

The Sustainable Development is made up of

  • one External Governor;
  • two External community members;
  • the Vice-Principal Finance and Administration;
  • the Director of Building and Grounds;
  • two faculty members named by the Faculty Council;
  • one staff member named by the Staff Council;
  • one manager named by the Managers’ Council;
  • one student named by the Students’ Representative Council;
  • the Sustainable Development Action Group intern; 
  • one representative from Champlain College;
  • the Chair of the Board of Governors; and
  • the Principal and Vice-Chancellor.
