Kevin completed his Masters in Sociology at the New School for Social Research in New York and is currently employed as a Senior Research Analyst for CBS News in New York City. Kevin writes: “Michael Lustigman, Melissa Clark-Jones, Loretta Czernis and Gerry Coulter provided me with a strong sociological base that became evident when I started my Masters. Toward the end of Honors I felt like I truly found the element of Sociology that I was most interested in, Cultural Studies. More specifically I was drawn to cultural sociologists such as Adorno, Veblen, and Hebdige. The Frankfurt School had a strong influence on the creation of the New School. I focused on the study of sub-cultures and their transformation to pop-culture.
My courses included everything from a quantitative research class to a course called Sex in The City, which brought us to S&M clubs, and Transvestite Prostitution Bars. As I was completing my Masters I was working at a Marketing Research Company that performed on-line survey research targeting the youth demographic (13-32). I did a mix of quantitative and a lot of qualitative data research including focus groups, and ethnographic research for companies that needed interviews for hard to access sub-cultures. I used SPSS for weighting purposes in that job. It was right up my ally, but the company was hurt by the NYC economy following September 11, 2001. After a year I moved into the television network business.
I work with the information from the Nielsen ratings and do pilot testing for shows that CBS is testing. The work is interesting and I hope to get into the program planning aspect of the network. I am living in the West Village in Manhattan, literally around the corner from Melissa Clark-Jones.”
