New Chair of Psychology
July 2011
The Department of Psychology is very pleased to announce that Dr. Dale Stout will be assuming the responsibilities of Chair of Psychology for a three-year mandate starting July 1, 2011. Dale is an experienced Chair who last served in this role from 2005 to 2008. It makes no doubt that the Department will greatly benefit from his dedication, sensitivity and wisdom. Among the challenges ahead, Dale will need to carefully manage growth in student enrollment, make one or two new Faculty hires and oversee the development of a small, well-targeted graduate program. It goes without saying that in these endeavors he will be able to count on the support of the outgoing Chair, Benoit-Antoine Bacon, who now begins a four-year mandate as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Psychological Health and Wellbeing symposium at CPA in Toronto

The Psychology Department was well represented at the annual Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) meeting that was held from June 2-4 in Toronto. Indeed, under the leadership of Fuschia Sirois, the Department organized the first off campus Symposium of the Psychological Health and Well-being research cluster: “Self-perceptions, Health and Well-being: A Temporal Perspective”. In addition to Dr. Sirois, Dale Stout, Claude Charpentier and our newest faculty member Laura Mitchell presented talks. The symposium was highlighted in the program as a “notable conference event”; it was well attended and very well received. Useful connections were established with like-minded academics from the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital.

Correctional Services visit the Psychology Department
January 2011
Parole Officer Alessandria Paige (a graduate of the Department) and Psychologist Isabelle Martin, both of whom work at the Cowansville Penitentiary, gave a very interesting account of their lives “inside”. They also encouraged students to seek employment with correctional services since several positions require a B.A. in Psychology and since there is currently a shortage of qualified applicants.
