BISHOP'S UNIVERSITY MODEL UN TEAM WINS MULTIPLE HONOURS IN NEW YORK
Sherbrooke, Que. – The Bishop's University Model UN team was named a Distinguished Delegation, and four pairs of students won committee awards, at the National Model United Nations, held from April 3-7 in New York City. Being named a Distinguished Delegation is the second-highest honour that can be bestowed on a delegation, and places them among the best of the nearly 200 delegations that attend the conference. This is the fourth time that Bishop's has won this honour (2006, 2008 and 2009 were the others).
The NMUN is a comprehensive and intense simulation of United Nations sessions. It allows students to take leadership positions, resolve conflicts and participate in negotiations. Each participating delegation is assigned a country, and delegations are honoured for properly representing their designated country, participating effectively in committees and proper use of rules and procedure. This year’s Model UN team consisted of 18 students who served in pairs on various simulated UN committees representing Australia, along with two head delegates.
Four student pairs were also recognized with individual awards. Tomas Marcinkevicius and Marianne Levesque, along with Nicholas Corney and Jessie Wallace were given awards for "Outstanding Position Paper in Committee", which are awarded to the top 10% of committee teams in recognition of outstanding pre-conference preparation. Kaitlin McWhinney and Sophia Faria, as well as Ekavi Beh and Lauren Cavanagh, were voted "Outstanding Delegates in Committee" by their peers as one of the top three delegations in their committees.
"Bishop's University's mandate is to provide students with a rich liberal education. The UN practicum reflects this mandate as well as providing students with the opportunity to challenge themselves and learn from others at this prestigious international conference," said Dr. Heather McKeen-Edwards, who has served as the course instructor since 2008-09.
Bishop's initiated the Model UN course in 1998-99. The program is funded by a combination of student fees, fundraising, and the generous support from the Bishop's University Foundation and alumni.

50th Anniversary Reunion
Dear Graduates in Political Studies/Political Economy/International Studies,
The Department of Political Studies was founded in 1961 under the leadership of Canadian diplomat Prof. T.W.L. MacDermot. This year we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary and we are inviting all of our graduate students (Honours, Majors and Minors) along with current and former faculty members to a reunion party and buffet dinner. This will be taking place at Homecoming on Saturday, 24th September, 2011 and will be a great opportunity to rekindle old friendships, stir up past memories, and find out what’s been happening to the Department since you left -- in addition to sampling the many other events on this Homecoming weekend.
We hope that you will be able to join us and you are welcome to bring a guest. In order to get a rough idea of the numbers, we would be grateful if you could reply and give us a preliminary indication of whether you plan to attend or not. A more formal invitation, plus more details about the event, will be sent out later this summer.
Have a great summer, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Bishop’s University’s TD Insurance Meloche Monnex International Development Internship holders head to Tanzania
Bishop’s University students Lucie Imbeau and Micah Orr are the first recipients of the TD Insurance Meloche Monnex International Development Internships. They leave for Tanzania this week to work with volunteer groups affiliated with Highlands Hope of Tanzania.
For two months, the Bishop’s University students will be working with orphans and vulnerable children under the care of the Kibena Women’s Association in Njombe, Tanzania, and assisting the Kibena Youth Association (KYOBE) and its choir in HIV awareness outreach to local villages.
“We’re very excited to be the first recipients of the TD Insurance Meloche Monnex internships,” says Lucie Imbeau who is completing her second year in Political Studies at Bishop’s University. “We’re hoping to build a solid base for future internships.”
“It was really helpful to meet two leaders from Highlands Hope of Tanzania when they visited the University earlier this month,” explains Micah Orr, also a Political Studies student at Bishop’s University. “It’s great to know some of the key people from Tanzania before we get to Njombe.”
The objective of the TD Insurance Meloche Monnex International Development Internship program is to provide two students with an opportunity to study the realities of rural Africa in solidarity with local volunteer activists. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement as well as an interview process with a faculty selection committee.
"This adventure is an experience of a lifetime. Lucie and Micah have an amazing opportunity to broaden their horizons while helping others,” said Serge Godbout, Vice President TD Insurance Meloche Monnex. ‘’Making a difference in the lives of these children in Tanzania is priceless and we are proud to support this humanitarian effort."
Bishop’s University launched the new International Studies program in December to encourage students to gain hands-on experience in the developing world as a supplement to the exceptional classroom experience.
2009 NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS - DISTINGUISHED DELEGATION AWARD
The Bishop's University delegation representing Belgium in the 2009 National Model United Nations simulation (NMUN) received a Distinguished Delegation Award for their work in New York City between April 7th and 11th. This places Bishop's among the top 40 delegations out of the 177 involved in the simulation. The NMUN attracts teams from all over the world with over 2300 participating students.
Since the course was developed in 1998, the Department of Political Studies has sent eight teams to this event and achieved a great deal of success (this was the third time our team received the prestigious Distinguished Delegation Award). This course is also one of the central components of the University’s new Major in International Studies.

Congratulations to our 24 students and Professor McKeen-Edwards
Successful Completion of the first Nicholas Bachand Canadian Civil Society Internship
On November 25, 2008, Maximillian Roy, a final year student in Political Studies, presented his experiences as the Nicholas Bachand Canadian Civil Society intern with the Townshipper's Association during the fall of 2008.
The Nicholas Bachand Canadian Civil Society Internship is a Political Studies internship, and it is intended to provide a practical work-experience related to our Minor in Public Policy and Public Administration. This internship enables students to contribute to the well-being of Canadian society by participating in voluntary and non-profit non-governmental organizations. The academic component results in three course credits, and the intern receives a stipend for the work done.
