Dr. Johnson and Professor Hogg are working in collaboration with Dr. Tareq Y. Ismael, University of Calgary, on an update and expansion of the book Canada and the Middle East, originally published in 1994 by Dr. Ismael. It will include a broad theoretical analysis of Canadian foreign policy, new case studies, and a chapter on the Canadian media and the Middle East. This project will also assess the ability of Canada to contribute to "peace building" in the Middle East in relation to Canada's self-described functional dimensions: diplomacy, development and defence. To these ends, Professors Johnson and Hogg will be examining and analyzing statistical data from government and international organizations, and will be conducting interviews with foreign affairs policy-makers in Ottawa and with Ambassadors to Canada, representing selected Middle Eastern countries.
