Astroseismology is the study of radial and non-radial pulsations in stars. As for seismology on Earth, a study of oscillations observed on the surface can yield information about the internal structure of the pulsating object. For gravity mode pulsators, for instance y-Doradus stars, identifying the modes of pulsation is a great challenge. Starting with the observations, I will explain what is being done in astroseismology at the University of Canterbury, and especially for my PhD thesis.
FLORIAN IS A RECENT GRADUATE OF BOTH THE BSc AND MSc PROGRAMS IN THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT AT BISHOP’S. HIS TALK IS DESIGNED FOR UNDERGRADS.
