A brief introduction to General Relativity will be presented, followed by a formulation of the Einstein field equations using a variational principle. By allowing the existence of a scalar field in flat spacetime, it is shown that a non-gravitating form of matter persists due to the non-minimal coupling of the scalar field with the curvature.
