The current acceleration of the cosmic expansion can be explained with a mysterious, exotic, and rather ad hoc dark energy, or by modifying Einstein's theory of gravity at large scales. This works for cosmology, but modifying gravity is risky: other aspects must be studied in order for the theory to be viable. The successes of, and challenges for, modified gravity will be discussed.
