The dark matter problem emerged in the early 1930s in response to observations of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Since then, we have found new evidence of its existence thanks to gravitational lensing. However, even today, this dark matter has evaded our attempts to identify and detect it.

This talk will cover some of the evidence for the existence of dark matter, the principal theoretical candidates for it, and the experiments designed to detect them.
