On the Theory of Polytropes:
A First View of the Interior a Star

Robert Lacroix
Bishop’s University

Friday, April 4, 2008
12:30 pm - 1:20 pm
JOHNSON 200 (BWH)

In this talk I will show that the study of polytropes is not just an academic subject that occupies several pages in a textbook on astrophysics, but that this study can bring us a profound insight into what a star truly is. Specifically, the talk will give the audience a succinct overview of three models of the more important models of stars:

  1. The standard model: Arthur Eddington,
  2. White dwarf: S. Chandrasekhar,
  3. Brown dwarf: Lorne Nelson

THIS TALK IS PRESENTED AT AN INTRODUCTORY LEVEL AND IS INTENDED FOR UNIVERSITY OR CEGEP STUDENTS.
