Nowadays General Relativity is facing theoretical and observational challenges. This has led many authors to consider alternative theories of gravity. The possible theoretical and cosmological shortcomings of general relativity and the motivations for alternative theories will be discussed. The requirements for a theoretically viable theory of gravity will be reviewed and the assumptions of general relativity will be critically examined.
