Galaxies are not uniformly dispersed throughout the Universe. Actually, when one looks deep into space, one sees huge empty bubble-like structures with the brightest galaxies seemingly concentrated on the boundaries. These bubbles are what we call cosmological voids and they are the largest structures in the Universe. In this talk the history of void research will be reviewed and the importance of voids in the context of our understanding of the evolution and structure of the Universe will be discussed.
