The early universe was hot and dense. As it expanded and cooled, the universe spent a brief time, of the order of 20 minutes, as a cosmic nuclear reactor. The elements synthesized in astrophysically interesting abundances during that epoch provide clues to the conditions and evolution of the early universe.
