PHYSICS SEMINAR

Amazing Astronomy using the New BU Telescope

The Bishop’s University Astronomical Observatory was constructed nearly six years ago and this past year a new 18-inch CDK telescope was commissioned.  Advanced physics students are now using this telescope to carry out their own lab projects. Several members of the Fall 2012 class will present the results of their astronomical studies. They will give a general overview of how the telescope operates, discuss the physics behind CCD cameras, and then present their data and analyses. Specifically they will show how we can determine the rotation period of the Sun, measure the orbital periods of binary stars, and accurately estimate the mass of Jupiter by observing the motion of its moons.  Finally, some spectacular photographs of nebulas will be shown and the techniques used to obtain them will be discussed.

Immediately after the seminar (5pm), everyone is invited to take a tour of the Observatory.

THIS TALK IS INTENDED FOR A GENERAL AUDIENCE.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
