Resources

Resources available to Environmental Science students include:

THE JOHN BASSETT MEMORIAL LIBRARY

The Environmental Science Programme is supported by the Bishop's University library resources (As a member of the CNSLP Canadian National Site Licensing Project), the Bishop's library offers free online access to many periodicals and abstract databases.  The Natural Science Programme has a budget for library book acquisitions; if you have proposals, don't hesitate to contact the Programme Chair.

SCIENCE LAB FACILITIES

Students in the Environmental Science Programme have access to the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, and other department laboratories. Check the single departments for specific information on their lab facilities. A recent addition to the Chemistry department includes an NMR spectroscopy machine.

COMPUTER LABS

We have both Linux and Windows labs (in Johnson 118, Hamilton 150, Nicolls 110 and 111, and in the Library). A fully Linux-based lab is housed in the main science building (Johnson 118). Most of the other labs are Windows based, with one lab catering solely to the Mac user.

BISHOP'S SUPERCOMPUTER

Bishop's has its own 96-node Beowulf-class supercomputer. This computer is essentially a cluster of 96 Pentium4 CPUs whose activities are coordinated by a central server. All of these nodes share data with a Storage Area Network. Students carrying out numerically intensive research projects have the opportunity to use this world-class facility.

THE BIOLOGY FIELD STATION

The Bishop's biology department operates a biological field station in the Eastern Townships rural setting.

THE MATHEMATICS/STATISTICS HELP CENTRE AND THE PHYSICS HELP CENTRE

The Math-Stats Help Centre in Johnson 7 provides individual assistance to students enrolled in mathematics or statistics courses. It is staffed by a coordinator assisted by advanced math students. The Physics Help Centre in Johnson 1 assists students enrolled in physics and astronomy courses, and is also staffed by a senior coordinator assisted by graduate students in physics. Students get tutorial help with lecture material and assignment or general interest questions.

BISHOP'S UNIVERSITY'S SURROUNDINGS

Our campus is located at the confluence of the St. Francis and the Massawippi rivers, in an area rich of lakes, marshes, and hardwood forests. Mining activities in the past have dotted the area with small mining operations, with the related pollution problems. The Johnville Bog, a rare Quebec ecosystem, is situated a few kilometers from Bishop's and has  recently been put in the joint care of Bishop's University and Universite' de Sherbrooke.  The area is ideal for hands-on projects in environmental science.
