Professor Englebretsen’s research over the past four decades has been connected, in one way or another with the work of Fred Sommers, an important and innovative logician and philosopher of language. Together with Prof. Sommers, he has formulated a powerful but simple new logic of terms that rivals the standard mathematical logic now dominant in philosophy. In 2000, they co-wrote and published a textbook presenting this new logic in its fullest form to date. Prof. Englebretsen has also recently published Bare Facts and Naked Truths (2006) in which he surveys the standard objections to a classical correspondence theory of truth and develops a semantic theory that can be used to formulate a realist version of correspondence immune to those objections. His current project is a book aimed at defending a structured realist account of ontology.
