Bishop's is a small University with a beautiful intimate campus, whose atmosphere makes it particularly easy to communicate with others and to get to know fellow students and professors.

Apart from Italy and Switzerland (where it is one of the four official languages), Italian is spoken in areas of the world populated by significant concentrations of immigrants of old and new generations. In Canada alone there are over one million citizens of Italian extraction, and the language can be heard and used in cities like Calgary, Montreal, or Toronto. Since the time of the Renaissance, Italian language and culture have had an enormous, long-lasting influence on practically all major civilizations of the western world, and this influence is evident in Quebec society. Of course, one should not forget that Italian is still the language of Art and Music.

Why study Italian at Bishop’s?

Bishop's University has been offering courses in Italian since 1974, but it was only in 1978 that students were given the possibility of earning a Minor in this language by completing a total of 24 credits. Students may also consider doing a Major in Modern Languages by completing 30 credits in Italian and 30 credits in either English, French, German or Spanish. The library houses many resources to assist in learning about language and culture, among these the Giovanni Di Lullo collection, one of the most comprehensive collections of Italian films in Canada. In addition, Italian tutors, workshops, and guest speakers, provide a dynamic learning environment.
