Dr. Cristiana Furlan
Assistant Professor
BA Ca’ Foscari (Venice); Ph.D McGill University (Montreal)
Cristiana Furlan obtained her laurea (BA) at the Università di Venezia. She then pursued her studies in Canada, where she received her Ph.D. degree in Italian Literature from McGill University. Dr. Furlan does research on travel (literature), exploring the distinctive kinds of knowledge it generates. She draws from works that tackle questions such as social and ethnic identity, transnational migration and the notion of community, and delves into the ways that the cultural norms of the traveller are transformed as s/he enters into different contexts.
At Bishop’s Dr. Furlan teaches a wide range of courses including: Italian Languages at all levels, Italian Culture and Civilization, Italian Literature and Italian Cinema. She has recently developed a course exclusively devoted to Venice, city that – she has no doubt – is “la città più bella del mondo. ”As a native Italian speaker she is particularly aware of the challenges of language acquisition; as a result she has adopted a communicative approach often engaging the classes in students-centred activities.
