(Class of 2003; Honours History/Minor German Studies)
After I finished at Bishop’s, I went to Japan for a year with the JET Programme and then did a Masters degree in History at the University of Victoria (good place to do Asian history). Now I'm finishing up a diploma in Broadcast Journalism. I’m working part-time doing communications and fundraising for a municipal political party and in a couple of months, I’m hoping I’ll either be working for them full-time or at a Public Relations firm in downtown Vancouver.
To be perfectly honest I don’t think my German degree helped me in any direct sense in getting into my profession. But then neither did History. In an indirect way, however, pursuing the Minor had an enormous impact in my professional successes. The German Studies Section exposed me to a whole new world populated by all sort of engaging and interesting people. The cultural awakening was invaluable in the long run for my ability to talk to and connect with people in both a journalistic sense, and now, more importantly, in a political sense.
