The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is the English title of a 1797 ballad by Goethe. The tale begins as an old sorcerer departs his workshop, leaving his apprentice with chores to perform. The apprentice tires of fetching water and enchants a broomstick to do the work for him, using magic he is not yet fully trained in. However, soon the floor is awash with water, and he realizes that he cannot stop the broom because he does not know the magic word to make it stop. Despairing, he splits the broom in two with an axe, but each of the pieces takes up a pail and continues fetching water, now faster than ever. When all seems lost in a massive flood, the old sorcerer returns, quickly breaks the spell and saves the day.

L’Apprenti sorcier est le titre français d’une ballade de Goethe dans laquelle un vieux sorcier quitte son atelier en laissant à son jeune apprenti quelques tâches. Ce dernier tente d’animer un balai pour qu’il effectue la besogne d’aller chercher de l’eau à sa place. Il réussi à animer le balai mais celui-ci s’emballe et le héros ne sait plus comment l’arrêter et le fend avec une hache. Le balai s’arrête sur le champ mais les morceaux forment chacun un nouveau balai et la ronde repart de plus belle. L'eau déborde et rempli la demeure du magicien qui revient et remédie à la situation.
