(Class of 2002; Major Modern Languages with concentrations in English Language Studies and Hispanic Studies/Minor German Studies)
I have recently started working in the Human Resources Department at Collège Lasalle in Montreal, but prior to that I have worked for 9 years at Jacob as a sales clerk and sales manager, both during and after my B.A.
My B.A. in Languages was very important during my years working for Jacob since the majority of my employees were Anglophone and because the Montreal clientele is very multicultural. I was able to speak Spanish often and even German! Customers felt pampered to be served in their mother tongue. I believe studying languages helps you develop skills in communications, skills that I make use of every day. In my new position at Collège Lasalle, I meet a lot of international students and am able to communicate with them in their language. Moreover, I have to write a lot in English and in French and colleagues are constantly asking me to help them with translations. All in all, even if you don’t find a job that specifically has to do with languages, sooner or later, you will find that the languages you’ve learned help you stand out and make your mark on the job market. I certainly don’t regret my choice!
