Research - Prof. JoJo Rideout

Professor Rideout's current project is a biographical article on Powys Thomas, which could possibly mark the beginning of a long-term project entitled Great Teachers of the Canadian Theatre, a series of biographies on Canada's first great theatre teachers. Mr. Thomas was the founder of the National Theatre School and the Playhouse Acting School, as well as an actor, teacher and director. Because Mr. Thomas began the formal training in this country and taught many of Canada's actors, he is the logical choice to begin this series. Professor Rideout will construct the biography through archival research at the Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, and the National Theatre School, as well as conducting interviews with people who have worked with Mr. Thomas. There is little public information about the training of actors in Canada or about the great teachers of Canadian theatre. This project seeks to remedy the lack of public information on the history of training actors in Canada.
