Research - Dr. Jordan Tronsgard

Dr. Tronsgard’s research agenda centres on contemporary Spanish narrative fiction and cultural studies, Hispanic film, the Spanish Civil War/Franco regime, and transnational identities.

His current project traces the representation of the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent Franco regime in novels of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.  In particular, he explores the ironic relationships established between a postmodern paradigm—due to the blurring of fiction, non-fiction, and fantasy—and an ethical/political response to memory in novels and films from the past decade.  Dr. Tronsgard is currently revising and editing his doctoral dissertation on this topic for publication as a book entitled: (Re)Writing the Spanish Civil War: Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy in Spanish novels at the new millennium.

Dr. Tronsgard’s “study-in-development” examines the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of emerging Spanish identities.  In particular, he concentrates on how matters of cultural inheritance resulting from collective historical experiences, such as the Franco dictatorship, relate to the less “traditional” and more transnational realities of Spain today.  This study covers narrative fiction, film, and other media of cultural production.   This project is being developed within the interdisciplinary dialogue that is the Transnational Identities axis of the Crossing Borders Research Cluster at Bishop’s.
