Bishop’s University Research Partnerships Awarded Over $4.5 Million, Individual Researchers to Receive Over $430,000
SHERBROOKE, QC - May 14, 2009
Bishop’s University continues to raise its profile as a centre for exceptional research, having recently been awarded significant grants from provincial and federal agencies. Research teams with involvement by Bishop’s professors have been awarded over $4.5 million, while individual researchers at Bishop’s University will receive over $430,000.
“Our increasing success in funding competitions demonstrates the high level of research that happens at Bishop’s,” said Bishop’s University Vice-Principal Michael Childs. “The results of our professor’s work will be of benefit to Quebec and the international academic community.”
The following Bishop’s faculty members are participating in multi-university research teams which have recently received important funding for their work:

Dr. Jade Savage in the Department of Biological Sciences is part of a team bringing together researchers from seven Quebec universities that has been granted $900,000 over three years by Le Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQRNT), under the Strategic Groupings program for the establishment of a Centre on biodiversity in Québec.

Dr. Eva Mary Bures and colleagues from Concordia, McGill, and Vanier College have been awarded a four-year grant of $616,924 by the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC), under the Support to Research Teams program to explore the impacts of educational technology in improving the teaching and learning of essential educational competencies.

Dr. Steve Harvey, Dean of the Williams School of Business, is involved in the creation of the Institut de recherche en santé publique de l’Université de Montréal which has been awarded 3 million dollars over four years by the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ), under the Research Team program. Almost all of Quebec researchers involved in health research other than basic biomedical research take part in this ambitious project.
Three Bishop’s professors have been awarded individual three-year grants by FQRSC:

Dr. Eva Mary Bures in the School of Education for her project on the implementation and assessment of students’ electronic portfolios by Quebec teachers ($38,839)

Dr. Patrick Dramé in the History Department for a study of unity and stability issues in Postcolonial Africa between 1957 and 2007 ($39,480)

Dr. Linda Morra in the Department of English for her work on women’s writing, national identity and the publishing industry in Canada in the 20th century ($39,471)
Two mathematicians were successful in the competition for five-year grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC):

Dr. Thomas Brüstle for his project entitled Cluster Algebras and Triangulations of Surfaces ($140,000)

Dr. François Huard for his work on the finitistic dimension conjecture ($70,000)
Two professors will receive financial support from the The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), under the Standard Research Grants program, for the next three years:

Dr. Syliane Charles in the Department of Philosophy for her work on Spinoza ($44,400)

Marketing professor Dr. Susan Reid for her analysis of the key antecedents and impact of market vision ($59,050)
