Bishop's University Provides the Location, Local Farmers Provide the Produce to Create the Lennoxville Farmers' Market.

June 5, 2012

Sherbrooke, QC - A vibrant Farmer’s Market will open this summer on College Street in the Borough of Lennoxville. Coinciding with the Borough’s popular Friendship Day, the market’s kickoff event will be held Saturday June 9, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., across from Clarke & Fils.

This past winter an energetic group of local farmers, who formed the Association du marché agricole de Lennoxville (AMAL), was granted a public market permit for seasonal produce by the City of Sherbrooke. The group of local gardeners and farmers approached Bishop’s University to propose hosting a monthly open-air market on University property and Bishop’s was quick to jump on board.

“Bishop’s University is pleased to support this local initiative, which will bring fresh produce and original artisan creations from the farm or workshop to Lennoxville,” said Principal Michael Goldbloom.

All goods sold at the Farmers’ Market are grown or produced within a 50 km radius of Lennoxville. The Market will offer an assortment of quality seasonal fruits and vegetables, maple products, bedding plants, flowers, as well as all kinds of handcrafted artisan works such as pottery, painting, woodworking and much more.

Mark McLaughlin, Councillor for the Borough of Lennoxville, is delighted to see the market come to fruition after much hard work. “This market provides a wonderful opportunity for everyone to pick-up fresh and local produce in a festive atmosphere while supporting local farmers.”

The overall aim of the Farmer’s Market is to develop a lively environment where residents and local producers are brought together. Organizers intend to expand the market’s offerings over time. “It will be wonderful for people of Lennoxville and surrounding communities to have such convenient access to local goods. We are thankful that Bishop’s University has given us permission to use their Co-op parking lot this summer. The central location makes a great home for the market," says Darren Bardati, AMAL’s coordinator.

Farmer’s Market days will take place on the second Saturday of each month, from June to October, beginning on Friendship Day and concluding on Thanksgiving weekend, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The market site is located between the train tracks in the parking lot at 2882 College Street, formerly the Co-op Building, located directly across from Clarke & Fils.

About AMAL
The Association du marché agricole de Lennoxville (AMAL) is a local group of farmers who have been granted a public market permit for seasonal produce (permis – vente à l’exterieur de produits alimentaires saisonniers) by the City of Sherbrooke.  According to AMAL’s charter, all producers wishing to sell products at the Lennoxville Farmers’ Market must apply to join AMAL and pay a small fee.  An Organizing Committee has been established to facilitate membership, inform sellers about the city by-laws outlined in the permit, help with public relations, and other decisions.
