Historic Entering Class Expected at Bishop’s University
August 30, 2011
Sherbrooke QC, August 30, 2011 - Residence halls and classrooms will be brimming as Bishop’s University welcomes the largest entering class in its history when students begin arriving on campus September 3. This year’s entering class is expected to be close to 925 students – a 10% increase over the entering class of 2010. Classes begin September 7.
“I’m very pleased that the University is bursting with ambition, full of students who are capable and willing to take on the challenges our world faces,” states Principal Michael Goldbloom. “Increasing student enrolment has been one of our highest priorities. The fact that a record number of outstanding students have chosen Bishop’s is testament to the excellent reputation of our University. By sharing the Bishop’s story with prospective students and their families, our current students, faculty, staff and alumni have all played a significant role in this enrolment growth”
Full-time student enrolment for September 2011 is expected to reach 2,250. This exceeds the objective of 2,200 full-time students by 2013–14 that was set in 2009. Enrolment peaked at 2,206 in 2005.
The growth is extremely positive news for the University as funding is directly related to student enrolment. Bishop’s hallmark is an undergraduate experience on a human-scale; ensuring the 2011 entering class is properly integrated into the Bishop’s community will be a focus throughout the year.
Quick to stress that everyone has played a role in this success, Director of Enrolment Management Jock Phippen has lead the recruitment and admissions process for the last two years. “We have focused on increased contact with prospective students, targeted recruitment events that highlight Bishop’s differentiating features, active engagement of our professors and students, as well as improved communications through traditional and new media,” says Mr. Phippen. “We have also stressed our campus visit program because we know once students and their families spend time on this campus and meet our people, it is hard to choose another university.”
“Bishop’s aspires to deliver Canada’s premier undergraduate experience,” says Principal Michael Goldbloom. “We continue to attract students who are curious and ambitious, students who will push the limits and confront convention. Each one of our students is on a journey and we want to help them discover how to reach their full potential.”
By the numbers (since 2009):
Applications: 32% increase
Admitted students: 29% increase
Prospective student tours: 80% increase
Entering class size: 21.5% increase
