Bishop’s Enrolment Up Seven Percent

Sherbrooke, Quebec - September 28, 2009

Bishop’s University full-time student enrolment for Fall 2009 is up nearly seven percent compared to Fall 2008. With an entering class of 736 students full-time enrolment is 1854, versus to 1740 students last year. This reverses a three-year decline in full-time enrolment figures at the University.

Indications through the spring and summer pointed  to a larger entering class as applications to Bishop’s and admissions offers to  prospective students were both up 12% over 2008 figures. The 2009 entering  class is 10% larger than in 2008, with an increase in students from Quebec,  Ontario, and abroad.

Increasing enrolment has been a major priority at  Bishop’s for the last 18 months. The entire community has played a role and  understands that enrolment is not simply the responsibility of the Recruitment  and Admission Office.   Faculty members made an effort to reach out to  CEGEPs and high schools. Non academic staff spoke at every opportunity about  their institution. Alumni and parents of current students passed on brochures  and prominently posted  a special purple  conversation starter.  Many students  participated in the Bishop’s Goes Home project and manned the phones, email and  facebook to speak with prospective students.

“We  are very pleased with this increase,” states Principal Michael Goldbloom. “It  demonstrates the power of the Bishop’s community when it works together towards  a common purpose. We will continue to focus on student recruitment efforts, and  on ensuring an exceptional educational experience for our students.”
