Bishop’s University to Honour Four Prominent Quebecers

SHERBROOKE, QC—Bishop’s University announced today the recipients of the honorary degrees that it will award at this month’s Convocation ceremonies. Four prominent Quebecers will be recognized by Bishop’s for their outstanding professional accomplishments and commitment to community service.

Multi-talented performer Gregory Charles, trailblazing CEO Monique Leroux, business leader and philanthropist Andrew Molson, and accomplished politician, civil servant, executive and Sherbrooke native Reed Scowen will be awarded honorary Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) degrees.

"These four remarkable individuals are not only successful in their fields, they are visionaries who have made significant contributions to Quebec society and culture," said Bishop’s University Principal Michael Goldbloom, "Bishop’s is proud to recognize their many contributions to the economic, social, artistic, and cultural well being of Quebec."

The four honorands will join the 501 graduates of Bishop’s University’s class of 2011 at its Convocation ceremonies on Saturday, May 28. A morning Convocation ceremony will take place at 10:30 am for all graduates earning the Bachelor of Arts degree, with all other degree candidates graduating in an afternoon ceremony at 3:00 pm. Also to be recognized at Convocation is former Bishop’s Chancellor William I. M. Turner Jr., who will be named Chancellor Emeritus. Japanese Professor Dr. Katsunori Hizawa will receive the William and Nancy Turner Teaching Award for his excellence in language teaching and his dedication to student success. This annual award was founded by Mr. Turner.

Two long-serving Bishop’s professors, now retired, will be named professors emeritus: Dr. Celine Dudemaine, professor of Spanish, and Dr. James Bowey, professor of business administration. Claire Kryczka from Ottawa, ON, a graduating environmental studies and geography student, has been named valedictorian by her fellow students and will address the graduating class.
