Regional basketball development and coaching centre opens in Sherbrooke

Sherbrooke, May 10, 2011 - Basketball Sherbrooke and Bishop's University today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding that will create a centre for basketball development and coaching in the Eastern Townships.

"This innovative structure came from an expression of our mutual needs, and a strong desire to respond to them. Athletes, coaches and officials will now benefit from significant resources devoted to their respective development," stated Paul Deshaies, the President of Basketball Sherbrooke.

"Bishop's University is proud to join with Basketball Sherbrooke in establishing a regional centre for coaching and development, and to take advantage of the talents of our coach, Alex Perno, as the Coordinator of the centre," said Bishop's Athletic Director Tony Addona.

Addona also noted the contribution of the Bishop's Gaiters to the functioning of the new centre, through space and material resources, as well as access to the sports facilities.

The two organizations have signed a three-year agreement, following the new development plan that Basketball Sherbrooke recently completed. This step was taken in close collaboration with several partners, including Excellence Sportive Sherbrooke.

Beginning this summer, the Centre plans to host camps for young prospects, along with other initiatives for local coaches and officials.
