Canadian Olympian to Speak at Bishop’s University

SHERBROOKE, QC—Clara Hughes, one of Canada’s most successful Olympians, will speak at Bishop’s University as part of the Donald Lecture Series on Wednesday, January 26 at 7:00 pm in Centennial Theatre.

A world-class speed skater and cyclist, Ms. Hughes is the only athlete in history to have won multiple medals at both the Winter and Summer Olympic games. She earned two bronze medals in cycling at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and a further four medals in speed skating over the course of three Olympics, including a gold medal in the 5000m event at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. Most recently, she was named Canada’s flag bearer at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and went on to win the bronze medal in the 5000m speed skate.

“We are very pleased to provide this opportunity to our students, faculty, staff and the community to listen to and interact with a truly remarkable Canadian,” said Michael Goldbloom, Bishop’s University Principal and Vice-Chancellor. “Her determination in athletic competition is unparalleled, as is her compassion and dedication to the many humanitarian causes which she supports. Bishop’s University is fortunate to welcome Clara Hughes and to share in her infectious passion and energy.”

In addition to her accomplishments in sport, Ms. Hughes is highly regarded for her contributions to many charities and causes, including Right to Play, an organization that improves the lives of children living in some of the world’s most disadvantaged regions by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace.

Ms. Hughes is an inductee of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and is a recipient of the International Olympic Committee’s “Sport and Community” award, as well as the “Spirit of Sport” award from the Canadian Sports Awards. Additionally, she is an officer of the Order of Canada and the recipient of several of honorary degrees.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
