Bishop’s Students Shave to Save
Sherbrooke QC - November 13, 2009
On November 19th, two Bishop’s University students will boldly buzz off their locks in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada. The two students, Elizabeth Robichaud and Allison MacLeod, will have their heads shaved by Dean of Student Affairs Bruce Stevenson and Principal Michael Goldbloom, who says he is excited about the event, proclaiming, “hair today, gone tomorrow.”
Robichaud and MacLeod explained that the “shave to save” is the culmination of six months of planning. “The idea stemmed from wanting to raise awareness about women’s health issues, and challenge common ideals of beauty,” said Robichaud. MacLeod added that she and Robichaud are “firm believers in self-motivated change.”
The two, who are actively involved in Bishop’s student life, have been accepting donations from students, faculty, and community members for the past four weeks. Their goal was $1500, and MacLeod and Robichaud say they are on their way to surpassing that.
The girls’ hair will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which turns donations into wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The proceeds will go to Ovarian Cancer Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women with ovarian cancer and funding medical research.
The shave will take place on Thursday, November 19th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Building on the Bishop’s University campus.
