Bishop’s University Sees Impressive Growth for the Entering Class of 2010
August 10, 2010
Sherbrooke QC, August 10, 2010 – Although first-year students will not arrive on campus until September 4, the entering class of 2010 is expected to be 880 students - a 20% increase over the entering class of 2009.
“When I arrived in 2008 my message was clear: student recruitment was the number one priority and everyone had a role to play,” states Principal Michael Goldbloom. “The significant results we have experienced over the past two years are a result of the entire Bishop’s community telling the distinctive Bishop’s story.”
Full-time student enrolment for September 2010 is expected to approach 2000, well ahead of budgetary projections set in 2009. At that time the University’s objective was to reach 2200 full-time students – the same student population as in 2004 – by 2013-14. The increased enrolment has many positive benefits for the University, including residence halls operating at capacity. Equally encouraging is the fact that this increase has taken place while maintaining high admission standards and seeing a slight rise in the average entering grade of admitted students.
Students, faculty, alumni and parents have all played a role in beginning the conversation with prospective students and their families. The Student Recruitment & Admissions Offices, under the leadership of Director of Enrolment Management Jock Phippen, have been successful at co-ordinating the University recruitment efforts, including more targeted recruitment visits, improved communications with prospective students, new marketing material and a significant emphasis on the campus tour program.
“The Bishop’s experience really is unique in Canada,” says Jock Phippen. “We will continue to improve our recruitment efforts to ensure we attract students who will thrive in and contribute to Bishop’s University and our surrounding community.”
By the numbers (2010 vs. 2009):
Applications: 20% increase
Admitted students: 20% increase
Prospective student tours: 64% increase
Entering class size: 20% increase
