How is Quebec faring in terms of mental health? Bishop’s University wants to know.

March 19, 2012, SHERBROOKE, QC— Bishop’s University is hosting the 34th edition of the Société québécoise pour la recherche en psychologie (SQRP) conference from March 23-25 at the Delta Hotel in Sherbrooke. Over 300 psychology researchers are expected.

The main event of this conference is the opening symposium on “the state of mental health in Quebec”, scheduled to begin at 17:45 on March 23rd. This intersectorial symposium moderated by Quebec Chief Scientist, Rémi Quirion, will include panelists representing various stakeholder perspectives and drawn from the governmental, academic, public, and community sectors.

“We aimed at bringing together panelists that don’t often have the chance to discuss this topic face to face while giving voice to those with lived experience of mental illness and recovery”, says Claude Charpentier, Bishop’s psychology professor and president of the conference’s organizing committee. “Is Quebec a ‘distinct society’ when it comes to the state of mental health of its population? Are we proactive about mental health and well-being in Quebec? Does mental health research have pragmatic value by truly addressing Quebecers’ needs? Where are we headed and what is at stake? We are hoping to answer some of these questions and to identify promising research leads.”

Psychological Health and Well-being is one of the four research priorities recently established by Bishop’s University. The research cluster’s director, Canada Research Chair Fuschia Sirois adds: “when most people think of mental health, they are in fact thinking of disease. We need to take a larger view of what mental health is and to stop defining it as the absence of psychosis or depression. In the same vein, we need to develop a much more preventive approach that starts by looking at the life choices we make.”

The symposium will be followed by a welcome cocktail for all delegates.

March 15, 2012, SHERBROOKE, QC— The Société québécoise pour la recherche en psychologie (SQRP) is holding its 34th annual conference from March 23-25 at the Delta Hotel in Sherbrooke. This year’s conference is organized under the aegis of the Psychology Department of Bishop’s University.

The President of the organizing committee, Claude Charpentier says: “Over 300 researchers will present their findings on topics as varied and exciting as the impact of sports concussions on the brain, autism, school success and perseverance, culture and well-being, interpersonal traumas within couple relationships, and many more. The vitality of psychological research in Quebec is truly impressive. This gathering represents a wonderful opportunity to build new research connections within a collegial atmosphere while encouraging the research efforts of young talent.”

Fuschia Sirois, psychology professor at Bishop’s, holds a Canada Research Chair in Psychological Health and Well-being, one of Bishop’s four research priorities. As part of the conference, she has organized a special symposium that aims at “understanding and evaluating well-being”. She reminds us that “well-being cannot simply be defined and understood as the absence of disease or stress. It is much more than that.”

Bishop’s Dean of Arts and Science, Benoit-Antoine Bacon, adds: “It’s a great honor for Bishop’s University to be hosting this conference for the very first time, and I want to emphasize that the Université de Sherbrooke has been an invaluable ally in this process. In particular, we were very proud to have three young Université de Sherbrooke psychology professors, François Courcy, Jean Descôteaux and Patrick Gosselin join Bishop’s professors on the organizing and scientific committees.”

The conference will open on Friday with a special symposium on the state of mental health in Quebec. Saturday night, Timothy Pychyl from Carleton University will present the keynote address on the topic of procrastination. Finally, Isabelle Peretz from the Université de Montréal will be honored with the Prix Adrien-Pinard for her outstanding contributions to the Neuropsychology of Music.

March 13, 2012, SHERBROOKE, QC— On Monday, March 19, Harvard cognitive scientist Steven Pinker will address Bishop’s University students, faculty and the general public as the University concludes another season of the highly popular Donald Lecture Series. Dr. Steven Pinker will speak about his latest book entitled The Better Angels of our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined.

Born in Montreal, Pinker earned a Bachelor's Degree in Experimental Psychology at McGill University and then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1976. He earned his doctorate at Harvard in 1979, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT.
Prominent American Civil Rights Activist and Former Presidential Candidate Jesse Jackson to speak at Bishop’s University

SHERBROOKE, QC—Tickets are now available for Jesse Jackson’s much-anticipated Donald Lecture at Bishop’s University. Jackson’s lecture will take place during Black History Month, on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:00 pm in Centennial Theatre. Due to the large turnout expected, tickets with reserved seating will be sold.

Tickets cost $15, with all proceeds going directly to the Bishop’s University Refugee Sponsorship Fund. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Centennial Theatre Box Office at 819-822-9692.

Likely the most influential civil rights activist in the United States over the past 40 years, Reverend Jesse Jackson is well known as the founder of both Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and the National Rainbow Coalition. These organizations, which merged in 1996, pursue civil rights and social justice initiatives while helping to increase political empowerment across religious, racial, gender and socio-economic lines.

“Jesse Jackson is a pivotal figure in the American civil rights movement, and a person who has demonstrated a tireless commitment to equality and inclusion.” said Bishop’s Principal Michael Goldbloom. “As a presidential candidate, his idea of a “rainbow coalition” of people from across racial and social lines helped to advance the discourse of civil rights, not only in America but around the world.”

Reverend Jackson advocated for national health care, a war on drugs, a dialogue with the Soviet Union and negotiations with the Middle East long before they were popular positions. South African apartheid and the fight for democracy in Haiti came to the forefront of the national conscience of the United States largely due to Reverend Jackson’s advocacy.

Having twice run for the democratic nomination for President of the United States, Jackson is a prominent political actor both domestically and internationally. He has acted a number of times as an international diplomat, securing the release of hostages in sensitive situations. In 1997 he was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Special Envoy of the President and Secretary of State for the Promotion of Democracy in Africa and was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S.A.’s highest civilian honour.

January 4, 2012, SHERBROOKE, QC – Bishop’s University announced today that Tony Addona will step down as Director of Athletics as of January 31, 2012. He will be relocating from Sherbrooke for family and professional reasons.
"We are disappointed to lose such a highly-regarded member of our close-knit community but we understand and respect the reasons that have led to this decision," said Principal Michael Goldbloom. "Tony is a person of great dedication and integrity who has earned the respect and affection of his colleagues. Addona has held the position of Director of Athletics since February 2002.
Sherbrooke, QC. – Fourth-year Bishop’s University student Samantha Juraschka will participate in...

Sherbrooke, QC. – Fourth-year Bishop’s University student Samantha Juraschka will participate in The Next 36, a prestigious entrepreneurial leadership program launched in 2010 through the University of Toronto. She will join 35 Canadian undergraduate students for a challenging eight-month program designed to foster a new generation of Canadian business leaders.
Juraschka, a Williams School of Business Finance and Marketing major from Waterdown Ontario, is a three-time Academic All-Canadian varsity soccer player. She is a former member of the SEED Investment Portfolio program in the Williams School of Business, and President of the Bishop's Student Alumni Association. Founder of the Gaiter Walk for ALS in 2009, Juraschka has served as chief organizer of the event in 2010 and 2011. To date the Walk has raised nearly $13,000 for the ALS Québec Tony Proudfoot Fund. In 2011, Jurashcka won the Eileen Healy Prize for Leadership from the LAMPE Foundation and was named University Athlete of the Year for Leadership from the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec.
“It’s very exciting. I’ve already learned so much about my abilities just by taking part in the intense selection weekend,” said Samantha Juraschka. “I’ll be working with three students from other universities. It’s going to be daunting to meet the redefined program expectations but I think it will motivate me to rise to the challenge. I’m honoured to have the opportunity to participate and I’m truly proud to be representing Bishop’s University.”
Participants in The Next 36 will work in teams of four to develop a new business venture. Each team will be given $50,000 in capital as well as access to mentorship from business leaders and technical support to help invent, launch and sell a product or service for a mobile environment.
The 36 students will work remotely until May, when they will gather in Toronto for an intensive summer session of entrepreneurship education led by some of Canada’s top CEOs, professors, and business mentors.
“This is an amazing storyline for the talent within our walls,” states Dr. Steve Harvey, Dean of Bishop’s University’s Williams School of Business. “The competition for this program is very real and intense, so we are very proud of Samantha's performance. That two of our students have won a spot in the program in its first two years speaks to the quality of the education offered at the Williams School of Business and the Dobson-Lagassé Entrepreneurship Centre.”
The Next 36, a program made possible through the generosity of individuals and charitable foundations, was founded by volunteer professor and serial entrepreneur Reza Satchu. It is championed by founding patrons Galen Weston, Paul Desmarais Sr., Jimmy Pattison and a long list of prominent Canadian business leaders. The program also has partnerships with Ernst & Young, Rogers Communications, MaRS Discovery District, University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario, McGill University and University of Waterloo.

Statement on University Rankings

October 26, 2011, Sherbrooke QC – Two public rankings of Canadian universities were released this...

October 26, 2011, Sherbrooke QC – Two public rankings of Canadian universities were released this week – the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report and Maclean’s Magazine Annual University Ranking. Bishop’s did not appear in the Globe and Mail publication, and was ranked 8th in the primarily undergraduate category in Maclean’s for the second year in a row.

Bishop’s has been an active participant in the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report Card which is based on student responses to a lengthy survey. In fact Bishop’s takes this process seriously; in previous years the University has used feedback from this Report Card to address areas where students felt their Bishop’s experience could be improved.

In January 2011 Bishop’s participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), another lengthy survey that the University administers to students that has become the premier measure of student engagement and satisfaction at North American universities. The University advised Higher Education Strategy Associates, the group that administers the survey for the Globe and Mail, that given our small survey size and concerns about student survey fatigue we wished to conduct the surveys (NSSE and the Report Card) on alternating years. Bishop’s also expressed our hope that, as in previous years, the Report Card would use data from the previous year for universities whose sample size was too small.

Unfortunately the Globe and Mail changed their policy this year, and Bishop’s did not appear in the Report Card which, year in year out, has demonstrated that Bishop’s students are among Canada’s most satisfied students. The University will participate as planned in the Report Card survey in early 2012.

Bishop’s overall rank in Maclean’s did not change this year. While the Globe and Mail Report Card is based on student experience, Maclean’s uses primarily third-party data to measure inputs and financial criteria, as well as a reputational survey (20% of the ranking) completed by 780 Canadians. The University is pleased that our ranking in reputation has risen, certainly reflecting the positive momentum and change the University has enjoyed over the last three years. Bishop’s continues to lobby Maclean’s to incorporate results from the NSSE survey as part of the rankings calculation as we believe students should be part of any university evaluation exercise.

These national ranking exercises continue to create controversy among universities in terms of their criteria for evaluation of performance and their results. However, it is evident that students and their families have difficult choices to make when confronted by the many options within the strong Canadian university system, so they rightly welcome attempts at an objective comparison of what is offered. Bishop’s University believes in transparency and will continue to participate, whenever possible, in these exercises.
