2017-18 SEASON OF DONALD LECTURE SERIES TO FEATURE DERESIEWICZ, SINCLAIR, MACDONNELL, ALHJOOJ

Bishop’s University is proud to announce the 2017-18 season of the Donald Lecture Series. William Deresiewicz, Senator Murray Sinclair, Maggie MacDonnell and Amal Elsana Alhjooj, this year’s speakers and social commentators, promise to keep the Bishop’s community engaged as ever by addressing some of the most compelling topics of our time.

The series will begin Tuesday, September 26, with author, essayist and critic William Deresiewicz. A former professor of English at Yale and Columbia, contributing writer for The Nation and contributing editor for The American Scholar, Mr. Deresiewicz will share his insights on culture and society.

On Tuesday, November 14, Senator Murray Sinclair will speak about his experience in the Manitoba and Canadian justice systems and his role as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, educator and community builder Maggie MacDonnell will speak about her teaching approach in  the  northern Quebec community of Salluit as well as her experience as the recipient of the 2017 Global Teaching Prize, which recognizes one teacher worldwide who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession.

Finally, on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, Amal Elsana Alhjooj will share her experiences as an advocate for women’s rights, Bedouin rights and peace. A Bedouin-Palestinian Israeli, Ms. Alhjooj founded the first women’s Bedouin organization, is the founding director of the Arab Jewish Center for Equality, Empowerment and Cooperation, and is the co-director of the Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development.

Celebrating its 10th season this year, the Donald Lecture Series brings speakers of national and international renown to the Bishop’s campus to provide insight, provoke thought, and stimulate debate on the most compelling issues and events in the world today.

The series is made possible thanks to the generous support of Bishop’s alumnus John Donald ‘60, DCL ‘12. All lectures are free of charge, open to the public, and available for worldwide live stream viewing.
